History
United FC Michigan was founded in 1997 by former professionals Andy Chapman and Ian Fairbrother. Their vision was to a build a club that was reminiscent of the local community football clubs that they grew up in and around in England. Community clubs were where players got their start; the club would look after the player and create a true sense of belonging as it prepared the player for its journey through the game. Likewise, United FC began as a local community soccer club that grew out of the neighbourhood and its roots lay in this vision.
The club was founded on developing the individual first - physically, technically, tactically and socially - in order to create quality young people, players and teams. Each player and team are a long-term project, and the club work year-round to ensure of their development. Recognizing where players are in their development and making sure they are put in the best position to succeed as they develop, and grow is a unique skillset of United FC’s staff. Our ultimate goal is to develop young people, not only as soccer players, but in their personality and character - creating lifelong memories, relationships, and a sense of family through the pursuit of this game.
In its founding year, UFCM had 4 teams, and by 2010, it had attracted many local players to join the United Family, bringing the club to over 40 teams in just over a decade. Much of the attraction to the club is rooted in its founding by former professionals and coaches who control the direction, development, and growth of the club. United FC has remained firm its position to retain its identity as a community club first and were never lured away by big name European clubs.
However, United FC’s heritage as a club founded by former professionals of the English Premier League has created a strong pathway to England and Europe for its players and teams. The club’s connection to Europe is a part of the evolving identity of the club and it seeks to expose young players to global footballing culture throughout their journey in the game. After being established for nearly 30 years, we are now preparing to start a new chapter as a club. Never losing sight of our heritage, United FC Michigan will continue to lead the way as one of the most positive environments and clubs in Michigan for young men and women to grow and excel.
